An inflammatory reaction to UV (ultraviolet) radiation damage to the skin's outermost skin layers is termed as sunburn. It gave the swollen and red appearance also may vary from mild to severe. The extent depends on the skin type and amount of exposure to the sun. Sunburn observed as the serious risk factor for skin cancer. Extensive exposure to sun or artificial sources such as tanning lamps, welding arcs or ultraviolet germicidal irradiation result in such condition:


The most recognized risk factors for sunburn are:
  • medications such as antibiotics, oral contraceptives, antidepressants, acne medications and tranquillizers
  • cosmetics
  • time of day when UV exposures at peaks
  • cloud cover
  • proximity to the reflective surfaces such as water, sand, concrete, snow and ice
  • seasonal such as late spring or early summer
  • higher altitude

Typically, it may cause pain in severe burn and also causes others symptoms such as blistering, swelling, itching, rashes, nausea, fever and fainting episodes. Prevention is always better than treatment so you may follow some simple steps to overcome this problem as listed below:

  • reduce outdoor activity 
  • wear a hat or sun-protective clothing if required prolong exposure
  • using sunscreen
  • keep hydrated
  • take a cool bath after exposure
  • severe pain with inflammation demands pain killer and antiinflammatory
Sunscreen is mostly preferred for sunburn protection provided choosing the right one and using at the right time is crucial. Ideally applied 15-30minutes before and after exposure. Choosing the right sunscreen matters most :
  • SPF more than 30
  • water resistant
  • broad-spectrum, where covers UVA and UVB

There are some home remedies to help out in solving this problem too:
  • apply a generous amount of aloe vera after exposure
  • mix one cup of apple cider vinegar in your bath water
  • add lavender oil or chamomile oil in your bath water
  • apply honey at the burned area for 30minutes before washing it off
  • apply greek yoghurt as a mask over the burned area
