In Trend: Caesarean Birth
As many know by knowledge or birth, a caesarean section(C-section) is a surgical procedure to deliver a baby through a cut in the mother's abdomen(tummy) and uterus(womb). An incision made across the abdomen(above bikini line) and lifts the baby out through it. Traditionally, it is planned by the doctor if women develop pregnancy complications or had multiple previous C-section and aren't considering a vaginal birth. However, recently many women opted for C-section over vaginal delivery due to several personal reasons instead of medical indications as listed below:
- phobia over vaginal delivery
- low pain threshold
- planning to deliver at their own pace or stipulated day due to firm belief on astrology , related to a special celebration and many
- feasibility or increasing availability for C-section mostly in a private healthcare centre
- quicker delivery time
C-section delivery should be performed due to strong medical indications rather than one's preferences. This became a new culture among pregnant mothers and they are willing to pay more to get it done at their own pace without considering its cons as pointed below:
- longer hospital stay and longer recovery time too
- discomfort from the surgery due to the incision, including wound healing
- risk of scar rupture in the subsequent pregnancy
- higher risk of blood loss and infection
- anaesthesia complications
- stillbirth to baby
- pulmonary complications to the baby
- delay from breastfeeding initiation
- quick breastfeeding
- better emotional bonding with baby
- boost the baby's immune capacity
- reduces the risk of infection and blood loss
- conserve fertility
- reduced complications in a future pregnancy
