Dry skin isn't a serious issue with various factors. However, it may cause the uncomfortable condition, marked by scaling, itching and cracking which can happen from head to toes but most commonly at the face, hands and legs. It can also be identified through flaking skin and can sometimes even crack and bleed if not treated. Or you may just naturally have dry skin. The physiology behind such problem is lack of moisture or appropriate amount of water in the most superficial layer of the skin, impaired skin barrier and dysfunction or deficiency in the necessary healthy fats in the top layer of the skin.
Dry skin or also known as xerosis often has an environmental cause. Potential reasons for dry skin areas listed below:
- weather
- exposure to extreme heat
- long and hot shower
- harsh soaps and detergents
- skin illness such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis
- hormonal imbalance
- vitamin D deficiency
There are certain signs and symptoms which is hidden behind this condition that varies from mild to severe as follows:
- skin tightness
- rough skin
- itching
- severe skin flaking, scaling and peeling
- fine lines or cracks
- grey or ashy skin
- redness
- deep cracks that may bleed
There are several yet simple skin care tips that could be adopted to tackle this problem:
- keep skin moisture with lotion
- limit hot water exposure, probably less than 10minutes
- skip the drying soap
- cover as much skin as possible in cold or windy weather
Few pieces of stuff can be grabbed from your kitchen to solve this problem within minutes:
- consume milk regularly
- apply coconut or sunflower oil at the skin every alternate day
- drape your dry areas of skin with honey
- eat foods rich with antioxidants such as tomatoes, carrot and blueberries
- include more virgin olive oil in cooking
