In Trend:Nepotism

 

Nepotism is a term that been hidden in the dictionary for may decades but appears widely now which almost perceived as a negative culture. By definition, nepotism is the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends , especially by giving or passing the jobs or authority. It commonly occurs within organizations, when a person is employed due to the familial ties. It is generally seen as unethical , both on the part of the employer and employee. The person who practices such culture is called nepotist. Nepotism observed as the stumbling block neither in a developed nor developing country so several countries have appointed an Anti-Nepotism law against the nepotist and the punishments have strictly adhered.

        In my opinion and certainly to many that nepotism is a negative sequence to a country nor society but it may have few benefits too as follows:

• reduce recruiting cost
• allows firms to inexpensively identify a pool of candidates for positions
• most dedicated to employees
• provide stability and continuity
• enhances commitment in an organization

However, we should not remain in a denial state perceiving nepotism has more advantages rather than disadvantages . The reason listed below will reveal why many people are mounting against nepotism:

• employee dealing nepotism in a workplace often suffer from a decline in morale 
• severe ethical penance
• a more professional or talented person overlooked which their merit is ignored and exhibiting a clear bias towards the personal relationship
• erodes the support of non favored employees
• reduce the quality and creativity of management
• discrimination or harassment based on a protected status
• facilitate corruption

   This not new culture despite the term appears new to many including myself, been infecting various industry such as business, film and politics. However, the act of nepotism in the film industry recently sparked great controversies and most spoken issues. Apparently, many celebrities are severely wounded due to nepotism to the extent of losing their income and even pushed into suicidal too. This problem can be handled in a very congruous manner without causing much twinge as follows:

• employers should elect a candidate for a position based on skills and talent
• both employees and employers are responsible to adhere to professionalism
• sensitive to morality and perform in a more ethical manner
• primary focus on the productivity of the organization and appreciate the person behind it
• enhance law to warn those who practice nepotism in an organization, the punishment should be severe enough to alert others from committing 

We are responsible to expel nepotism otherwise it will passed down to the successive generations and might be more ruinous if left unattended. Everyone is talented, skilful and professional to some extent so a healthy competition will be very much helpful to construct a better society and nourishes the economical stability of a country. Nepotism should be aborted completely despite a few good reasons it has to stand. Both nepotism and caste selection are venomous which stops human from behaving as they supposed to be, in short halting their productivity. Caste selection is almost similar to nepotism but varies in several elements, I promise to discuss it further on the next In Trend.
