Beyond Mat:Vrikshasana(Tree Pose)


Vrikshasana or tree pose is a balancing asana which can be easily done with good concentration. Vrikshasana derived from Sanskrit,vriksha means tree and asana is yoga posture. So performing this posture is like a tree in the ground. This pose helps to achieve both physical and emotional balance if practised properly. Apart from that tree pose also helps to strengthen tendons and ligaments of feet and buttocks.
       
It can be done quickly, at your own pace. Firstly, stand erect and raise both your hands above head to achieve Anjali mudra. Then raise your right leg and place it over inner left thigh firmly, the higher will be better. Adjust your position and remain in this pose for about 20-30s or longer as per your convenience. Then drop your right leg and alternate with left leg. The core practice of this asana is maintaining balance but it might be difficult for the beginners. Constant practice required to attain the benefits. Apart from balancing posture, this pose helps in pelvic stability and align the spine.
         Tree pose is known as a remedy for flat feet and therapeutic for sciatica. Yoga helps to elevate your mood called "high on yoga" due to GABA neurotransmitters release. Those with high blood pressure should perform this pose in moderation. A pregnant mother may practice this pose till 2nd trimester and totally avoided in 3rd trimester. While achieving balance or equilibrium are challenging in this pose so brief meditation or breathing techniques can be employed prior to the practice. One may perform tadasana(mountain pose) or baddha konasana(butterfly pose) prior to practising this pose to maintain balance.
