What are the medications should I avoid during my pregnancy?

This is a very common question that arises in every pregnant mother.The lists are long but the one mentioned below are some of the common medications in use either by your family physician or over the counter:

  • Phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine(cough mixture); mostly in the first trimester
  • Ibuprofen
  • Naproxen
  • Isotretinoin
  • Antihypertensive such as benazepril,lisinopril
  • Sodium valproate which used for seizures
  • Methotrexate which is used for arthritis
  • A blood thinner such as warfarin
  • Lithium
  • Alprazolam ,antidepressents
  • Paroxetine
  • Antidiarrheals such as Kaolin and pectin, Bismuth, Loperamide, Lomotil
  • Antacid preparation such as Aluminium hydroxide, Simethicone, Cimetidine, Ranitidine
  • Antifungal such as clotrimazole,micanazole
FDA has classified those drugs either in category C or D which is not safe to consume so it is best to avoid. Your doctor will find some other alternatives which are safer to consume during pregnancy.
